The assessment process

Please read the relevant programme section so see how your proposal fits with the objectives of that programme. Our exclusions list and frequently asked questions sections will also help you find out if your organisation and proposal is eligible for funding.

If you have read our programme criteria and are satisfied that your proposal is eligible for funding then please complete an on-line enquiry form here or write to:

Your application will be checked to see whether it fits our funding criteria. We aim to do this within one month of receiving it and will write to you if we decide it is not eligible for funding. If your application appears to fit our criteria, we will invite you to submit a full application form.  When considering your full application, we will look at:

• The need for the project and how you have identified this
• How you are involving the people who will benefit from your project, and numbers of people the project will help
• Your project budget
• Your organisation’s ability to deliver the project
• The difference your project will make
• How you plan to evaluate the project
• How your project fits with other projects we are currently funding
• Your organisation’s governance arrangements, financial strength and sustainability

The assessment stage is likely to include one or more meetings or phone calls with you to discuss and develop the project.

If, at any stage during the assessment process, we decide that your application does not meet our criteria, we will tell you and explain why. If it meets all our criteria, a final decision about whether or not to fund the project will be made by our Trustees or, if it is a small grant under £5000, by the Chief Executive.

Our Trustees meet four times per year to consider project, but decisions on grants under £5,000 can be made between meetings. In exceptional circumstances, where a project requiring more than £5,000 but less than £30,000 cannot wait for the next Trustees meeting, a decision can be made outside the usual cycle.

There are no application deadline dates. Depending on when an application is received, it may take up to five months to complete the assessment and decision process. Your assessing officer will keep you informed of when decisions will be made.
