The Barrow Cadbury Trust in partnership with the Transatlantic Council on Migration, an initiative of the Migration Policy Institute will be hosting a panel discussion entitled ‘Migration, public opinion and politics: rhetoric or reality check?’ between 14.30-16.00 on Tuesday 1 June at the Square Business Centre. (Glass Entrance, rue Mont des Arts, B-1000 Brussels).

Across Europe, immigration dominates the headlines. This event will explore the interplay between migration politics, public perceptions and the media. How is immigration perceived in the context of still rising unemployment? And ongoing debates about citizenship and identity? How do public attitudes towards immigrants and immigration affect political debate and policy?

This panel discussion will place particular emphasis on the effect of the economic crisis upon public attitudes, as well as the links between public opinion and the emergence of extremist parties across the continent. The speakers will include experts from the worlds of politics, academia and civil society.

This event will be one of a series of high profile events and exhibitions organised within the framework of European Foundation Week, led by the European Foundation Centre (EFC).

The event is open to all but please contact Annie Bruzzone (annie.bruzzone@champollion.co.uk) if you would like to attend. You are also very welcome to distribute this invitation to relevant colleagues and networks.
