Grant programmes
We have consolidated our funding into three programme areas:
- Young Adults and Criminal Justice
Helping young adults who are in, or at risk of being in the criminal justice system, to make a successful transition to adulthood and improve their life chances. - Inclusive Communities
Alleviating poverty and exclusion among marginalised groups. - Global Exchange
Exchanging good practice across boundaries and using it to reinvigorate debates taking place in the UK.
Young Adults and Criminal Justice Grant Programme
In the Autumn of 2005, the Barrow Cadbury Trust published Lost in Transition, a report of the Barrow Cadbury Trust's Commission on Young Adults and the Criminal Justice System. The Trust has responded with a grant programme to develop the Commission's findings into practical solutions, to help young adults make a successful transition to adulthood and improve their life chances by reducing their contact with the criminal justice system. This programme replaces the Offending and Early Intervention grant programme.
The Barrow Cadbury Trust supports groups developing pioneering approaches to working with young adults in the community, particularly at the grassroots. While seeking to develop partnerships for all of the Commission's recommendations, we are particularly keen to support groups working with young adults on these issues:
- mental health and drug and alcohol abuse
- resettlement and employment
- improving life chances
Please note that only a small number of pioneering approach grants will be made in 2008/09.
We particularly welcome applications from groups led by or working with black and minority ethnic young people. As we feel that many vulnerable young people reach maturity well after 18, our focus is not strictly bounded by age. But although our age range is flexible, we are unlikely to fund work only with young people under the age of 18.
We will give priority support to West Midlands grassroots groups, but may in exceptional cases consider working with other organisations who demonstrate good practice.
For information on the groups we fund in this area, please visit our case studies section.

Inclusive Communities Grant Programme
The Inclusive Communities programme aims to foster a just and cohesive society by tackling poverty and exclusion among marginalized groups. Within the inclusive communities programme we have four themes: race and poverty; asylum and migration; independent living for disabled people; and supporting the voluntary and community sector.
Cities in Transition and Progressive Approach to Migration are our key grant programmes within the Inclusive Communities Programme.
Within our Cities in Transition project we tend to fund organisations whose work aims to:
- help foster understanding and co-operation between people of different ethnicities, religions and backgrounds
- develop the economic independence and equality of disadvantaged people, especially women
Within our progressive approach to migration project, we tend to fund organisations whose work aims to:
- support the engagement and political participation of migrant communities
- helps migrant communities voice their concerns to those in positions of political power
- helps to foster a progressive public debate over migration
Within our independent living for disabled people project, we tend to fund organisations whose work aims to:
- good and interesting ways of supporting people locally
- improve the financial resources available to support independent living
We will not be accepting any unsolicited requests under the independent living theme in 2008/09.Within our supporting the voluntary and community sector theme, we aim to understand and support a healthy and dynamic third sector. We do not currently accept external ‘out of the blue’ applications for work carried out under this project.
In general, we particularly welcome applications from local groups tackling new and emerging issues in the community; groups showing effective methods of involvement and delivery; and groups who link local experience with national policy making.
We will give priority support to West Midlands based groups, but may consider working with other organisations who demonstrate good practice. For further information on our work in the Inclusive Communities programme click here.
Global Exchange Grant Programme
This programme is different from our UK programmes due to the particular challenges of identifying and supporting projects across the world. The Barrow Cadbury Trust do not encourage unsolicited approaches. Instead, the Trust uses an outreach approach to find groups that we wish to support. We fund groups that demonstrate good practice and who can reinvigorate debates in the UK.
Our current priorities include:
- Middle East
- Europe
- Gender and Social Capital
We currently fund the Trust for the Promotion of Education and Children (TPEC) who work in the West Bank towns of the Palestine authority.
We support a number of European projects that campaign for a more progressive approach to EU policy on issues of diversity, integration and migration.
We support women’s organisations in the UK and internationally, in particular, groups that can share best practice in helping women to become politically engaged.
